Sputnik Sweetheart Haruki Murakami

I have completed this book in 3 days and there are lots of interesting things in the book. It was a strange experience to read Sputnik Sweetheart but not because of the book, I didn't think it was all that weird but my reactions to it were weird as it reminded me of a lot of other books I have read before. I had not read it, and so I quickly got hold of it to change this. Initially the situation in Sputnik Sweetheart seemed pretty normal, a sort of twisted romance story. Firstly, Sputnik Sweetheart was translated by a different dude than the guy who translated the other two Murakami books I've read, which isn't something that I'd normally mention except that, well, I could kind of tell! Same as “Norwegian wood”, Sputnik Sweetheart ends with one phone call. As such, I'm trying to catch up on some of his older stuff, since I'm woefully under-read when it comes to the most famous contemporary Japanese novelist. Boy (K) loves girl (Sumire), girl loves other girl (Miu), other girl is married but has never been in love. The translation I read, by Philip Gabriel, is smooth, accessible, and often beautiful. KT has a few of Murakami's on her bookshelf, and I must say I only went for it because we have another of his on Bookclub's up-and-coming list. Review: Haruki Murakami's “Sputnik Sweetheart”. The transition is smooth and stimulating - Sputnik Sweetheart never fails to surprise and engage as its narrative moves through different forms. I was talking to my boss at work about Murakami, and he said how his favourite novel by him was Sputnik Sweetheart.
